Tuna Frenzy

About This Work

Capturing images in these moments is always an adrenaline rush. Timing is everything, and many attempts are made to get in the perfect position to dive in on the action. Most times the action is over by the time I dive in, however this opportunity was an absolute success. As difficult as it can be to get to the right spot at the right time, it is increasingly more difficult to remain calm and composed while big tuna are totally surrounding me, swimming at top speeds overwhelming there prey.

For many years I have imagined this image in my mind. Many only see this action unfold from the surface of the ocean. I wanted to create an image that would capture the chaos from above and below providing a window into what these moments look like, uncovering the thin blue vail that hides so many secrets and mysteries.

Finally all the stars alined. I could feel it as I was about to dive into the ocean. I was in the perfect spot right in the middle of the madness. I knew that this might be the best and only opportunity to get this shot, and I would have to dedicate the dive to creating the image. As calmly as possible I slid into the water and began shooting vertical images adjusting my focus above and below in order to photograph the scene as sharp as possible. Tuna swimming behind, next to, and below be as fast as torpedos but I had to stay focused on the image. A minute later it was all over, the tuna and birds gone in search of the next school of small fish to feed on. I quickly reviewed the images on my camera, and to my satisfaction, the image I have imagined for so many years had come to life. I present to you, The Tuna Frenzy.
