A brown pelican's pouch can hold about three gallons of water, close to three times more than its stomach can, and it might be the best fishing tool nature ever built. Everyone has seen it work from the beach. A plunge, a splash, a tilt of the head. Almost nobody has seen what it looks like from underneath.
I was in the shallows of Magdalena Bay when the chance came, and it lasted maybe a second. A bird swept its open bill down right past my dome port, and with the bright sky behind it the whole pouch lit up from the inside. I could see every ridge and fiber in it, stretched wide against the green water and the rippled sand below. I got the frame right before it pulled up and was gone.
From the beach it is a splash. From down here it is engineering.
