About This Work
Some places live in your imagination long before you ever stand in front of them. Teahupo'o was always that place for me: a mystical wave at the end of the road in Tahiti, where the pavement literally stops and there is nothing beyond the village but reef, mountains, and the most perfectly shaped wave in the world. You grow up seeing it and hearing about it, and you never know if you will ever get to witness it yourself.
When that chance finally came, we boarded small boats to reach the break, a quarter mile offshore. The wave jumps from deep ocean onto a living coral reef just a few feet below the surface, and that sudden shallowness is what bends the barrel into something almost too perfect to be real. Water so clear and turquoise you can see straight through the face, with Tahiti's green peaks stacked behind it. The first barreling wave I watched, I could not believe my eyes. The entire experience felt surreal, beauty beyond words.
This frame holds one moment of that day. But Teahupo'o is more than a wave. It is a sacred, mystical place that deserves respect and protection. That day the ocean showed me her masterpiece. I was ready.
