This image was taken offshore Magdalena Bay, Mexico during the seasonal sardine migration, one of the most intense experiences in underwater photography and something I had wanted to witness for a long time.

Entering the water here means stepping directly into an active hunting zone. Sharks, whales, marlin, sea lions and other pelagic species converge around massive bait balls of sardines. For me, though, it has always been about the marlin.

The striped marlin is my favorite of the pelagic species. The colors, patterns, and movement are mesmerizing.

The hunt often begins when the marlin rise from the depths like a pack of wolves, working together to corral the sardines into a tight, almost static ball. From there it becomes a choreographed dance. Each movement is precise and intentional as they control the bait. Then, in an instant, everything can change. The scene turns chaotic without warning, and marlin charge in fast and close, passing within arm’s reach as they strike. It is powerful, unpredictable, and dangerous.

This photograph comes from one of those brief moments when everything aligned. The encounter lasted only seconds, but it is a moment I will never forget.
