About This Work
I had already been photographing Kilauea's fountains for hours when dawn broke over the crater. First light caught the mist hanging above the eruption, cool morning moisture mixed with volcanic steam, and then a rainbow appeared. Not arching over the land like every rainbow I have ever seen, but floating inside the fog itself, hovering above one of the most violent places on Earth. I worked fast, balancing my exposure between the intense glow of the lava and those whisper-soft colors drifting in the mist. Moments later the light shifted, and it was gone forever.
To Native Hawaiians, this crater is the sacred home of Pele, and standing there that morning, I swear she was showing herself. Delicate color suspended over fire, smoke, and rivers of lava. That is the ghost bow, and this is the only frame of it that will ever exist.
It was one of two once in a lifetime images the volcano gave me that morning. The other is Spirit of Kilauea.
