A pelican's strike is over in under a second. The pouch balloons, the water rushes in, and it is done before the ripples settle. There is no catching it from the beach. You have to already be in the water, at their level, when it happens.
I was working a sandbar in Magdalena Bay while a squadron fed all around me. This bird came through with its bill thrown wide open in the middle of a scoop, and as it passed it glanced over at the camera. It never spooked and never changed course. It just noticed me, kept feeding, and carried on while the rest of the group paddled past behind it, webbed feet churning up the green shallows.
I came for the behavior. I left with a portrait.
