Brown Pelicans | Magdalena Bay, Baja California, Mexico
The pelicans were out early that morning, feeding in the shallows all around me before the sun was fully up. They were close enough that I could hear the water running off their bills. Pelicans are usually all business when they feed, but as the light came in low over the bay, one of them decided to do something different.
It reared up out of the water and threw its wings wide open just as the sun cleared the horizon behind it. The light blasted straight through its feathers while the rest of the flock sat on the waterline watching. I locked focus on the bird and set my composition half in the water and half out, what is known as a split shot, so the frame caught everything at once, the glow and the spray up top and the calm green shallows underneath. I pressed the shutter once and knew I had it.
Some mornings ease in slow. This one showed up ready to work.
