When a bait ball forms in open water, word travels fast. The sardines pressed themselves against the surface in a flashing silver cloud, and from every direction, the marlin began to arrive.
I watched this one come in like it was pulled on a wire, lit up electric blue, bending its whole body into the turn as its bill reached the school. Behind it, a second marlin appeared out of the deep, on its own path to the same silver cloud. In the water you feel it before you see it, the sense that the empty blue around you is suddenly not empty at all.
