Striped marlin carry their own light. Their stripes flash like a signal, intensifying in the heat of the chase, and they burn brightest at the exact moment the fish is most dangerous.
This one passed close enough to fill my frame from bill to tail, every stripe flushed electric blue and violet, its pectoral fin glowing like a blade lit from within. Sunlight filtered down from the surface, but the glow was not coming from above. This is a predator that seems to generate its own light. At that range you don't chase the shot. You hold still, hold focus, and let one of the fastest animals in the ocean decide how close is close.
Some animals show their power with size or with teeth. The marlin shows it with light.
