Every fall, miles off Magdalena Bay in Baja, striped marlin gather for the sardine run in numbers found nowhere else on Earth. We spent four days out there on pangas, following the diving birds to find the bait balls, waiting for one to go static so we could slip into the blue and watch the hunt unfold.
This is what a striped marlin looks like at the height of that hunt. When they commit to the ball, their whole body ignites. The stripes flash electric blue and the fins glow like neon, a light show the fish itself controls. This one swept past close enough to fill my frame, fully lit, every line of its body built for speed.
When a striped marlin lights up like this, there is only one word for it.
