The marlin do the work at Magdalena Bay, but they never feed alone. Sea lions shadow the hunt, waiting for the moment a bait ball is pinned against the surface, and then they crash it.
This one swept in right past me, front flippers spread like wings, banking hard for the school while the marlin that had herded it held its line below. Two completely different hunters after the same silver prize. The marlin is all speed and edge, a blade in open water. The sea lion is all agility and nerve, bending through turns nothing else in the ocean can follow.
The marlin set the table. The sea lion came to eat.
