About This Work
Offshore Costa Rica, we were scanning open water for signs of life when we spotted a piece of bamboo drifting on the surface. Out there, anything that floats becomes its own ecosystem. Small fish gather beneath it for shelter in the open blue, and the predators know it, investigating every floating object for the chance at an easy meal. As we eased closer, the bamboo was loaded with life, and below it, yellowfin tuna were staging to feed.
I slipped into the water near the bamboo and waited, watching the tension build between the bait and the hunters holding below. Then, like a switch, it went off. One after another the tuna took their turns, an organized assembly line of torpedoes, each carving through the bait on its own pass before the next came through. Calm to chaos in a single second.
That switch is where the name comes from. When it flips, they go wicked, and this frame holds the exact moment it happened.
